Space – Size and Scale

Astronomy is possibly the oldest and most researched subject in our world. We have studied it for countless generations and there is still heaps we don’t know. Astronomy is the study and nature of space and our solar system. This video reflection is about the size and scale of our solar system and putting it to an actual accurate scale.

In pictures, when we see two planets “in scale” they are put relatively close to each other. When we look at pictures we assume the space between the two planets is really very small compared to what it actually is. This goes for the solar system too. If we were to fly out and take a picture of the solar system with all the planets in there, we would fly out so far the planets would turn microscopic and there would be no point in taking the photo. So in order to fit it all in, people have to shorten the scale so we can see everything, which like I said before, changes our beliefs as to how far away the planets actually are from each other.

I’d love to experience this in person so the question I have is how amazing is it? What are the feelings you experience when you’re up there?

 

 

Teaching Astronomy Reflection

This video reflection is about teaching astronomy and how the theories came to be.

In ancient Grecian times, there was very little known about our solar system, how it works and the way it moves. Most of the theories people had come up with were based on very rough assumptions and estimates. The most popular theory of the time was that the moon, sun and stars were all moving in the sky because if Earth was constantly moving, we would feel it. Obviously, times have changed since then but it took a while to get there.

Many astronomers and mathematicians had worked and worked at finding a definite answer to how our solar system works. Some of the first drawings of our universe held Earth in the middle with the moon opposite it, and then the sun opposite the moon. The stars were drawn to be circling around the earth. Obviously, over time more and more theories had been made and astronomers had been taking more steps to where we are today. One astronomer who has brought us to where we are today was Galileo. Galileo built a telescope and pointed up to the night sky. He proved to everyone that not everything revolved around the earth. Galileo discovered that the planet Jupiter seemed to be host to 4 moons of its own which was the first direct evidence to his theory. His work later went on to help create the theory we have today. That all the planets orbited around the sun which means in order for the sun, moon and stars to move across our sky, our earth must be rotating.

Finally, I have a few question to ask. Firstly, why did people, before all the technology was invented, even think about exploring space if they weren’t really sure it even existed? Secondly, how long did it take to develop and understand the theories of space and our solar system we hold today? And lastly, do you think our understanding of space could change more in coming years or do you believe we know close to everything?

Valedictorian Speech

Hi! My names Alexis Koukounaras and I will be your valedictorian for tonight. I’d like to start off by saying welcome to the Class of 2016 Graduation Ceremony. I know this is a very big day, not only for us graduates but for many others too. The teachers, relieved as they may be, will be losing a pretty awesome group of kids and may become a bit sensitive. Guys, I know it’s hard but try not to shed too many tears once we’re gone. I also know there’s got to be a few emotional parents in the crowd tonight, including my own mother. Don’t worry guys, your little babies aren’t all grown up just yet! Although, we’re getting closer.

Ok, enough talking to the parents. For now, let’s just talk about them. Graduates, I hope you guys all know that your family is very proud of you. They’ve got high hopes for you and they have faith in you. You’re making them remarkably proud by showing them how much you’ve done and the amount of potential you’ve got. I mean have a look at them now, you can see them smiling, snapping their cameras, even wiping away a few tears. They’re more emotional than we are! But like I said before, today is a big day for them too and today you guys are making them so happy. Today they won’t be able to wipe the smile off their face…. Today would be a good day to ask for some money.

No but seriously, today would also be a fantastic time to run up to your family and give them a massive hug and thank them for supporting and believing in you because seeing  you graduate primary school is definitely something that they will love and cherish forever. This means hugging and squeezing your mum, dad, step mum or step dad, your grandparents, brothers and sisters, uncles and aunties and everyone who cares about you because they want to see you live your best life and grow up to be a strong, unique and independent person.

Graduation can be seen as a kind of coming of age. It’s more of an official way of signalling that we are taking another step in our lives and honestly that is what we are doing. We‘re turning a new chapter, preparing for what’s to come.

With every year, every one of us graduates have become a little more independent, responsible and mature. I mean, think back to your first day of school, how exciting, nerve-racking and a little intimidating too. Look at the amount of growth you’ve made from then until now. I bet when you look at the little preps you think, Wow! Look how little they are! Was I really that young and small? Yes. Yes, you were. And get used to that feeling, because you’ll be feeling that for the rest of your life.

But when we look at each other, we can see how much we’ve all grown up. We’ve learnt heaps of new things and have matured a whole lot during the course of our schooling life. We have learnt to become leaders, mentors, successors. Have a look at all we have accomplished this year alone. Teaching the year 5’s about our sports programs, standing as patient role models to our buddies, performing at our school concert, Come Fly with Me and went to a whole different state on camp. There is so much more I could mention but we’d probably be here all night. What I’m trying to say is that we’ve accomplished so much in our beginning lives already, imagine what we could do in years to come. We all know this class is capable of great things and I am so privileged to be a part of such a talented group of people.

Everyone I have met over my time at this school has left an impression on me in some way. Just to pick out a few, we have Zoe and her amazing writing skills (which got her work published in a book!), Shanice and her dancing feet, landing her in numerous productions performed around Australia, followed by Ben and Sammy with their special puns and jokes, having the ability to both make you both laugh and cringe at the same time. Honestly, I could comment on every single one of the graduates for they are all unique and special in their very own way. I’m sad to be leaving them but I know we will never forget the great times we’ve had at this school.

All I have left to say now is thank you. Thank you Moonee Ponds Primary for being the best learning foundation there is. Thank you overworked yet persistent teachers for doing your best with us and teaching us what you know. Thank you patient parents for putting up with us and supporting us over the course of our lives. But most of all, thank you to my fellow year 6’s who have helped me make the most of the past 7 years. We’ve driven both the teacher and our parents through the walls with frustration yet managed to make them proud of us at the same time. Well done. But all in all, you guys are all pretty special and will be remembered in years to come.

So now I’ll leave you with this final quote from a fantastic author by the name of Dr Seuss.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

Congratulations graduates and thank you for your attention.

Humans in Space

This video talked about how humans have increased their knowledge about space by going into space. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first astronauts on the moon and have been remembered as a major part of our world’s history. From their experiences in space, we have been able to gain heaps of knew knowledge that we could put to use.  Organisations are also thinking about sending people to live on mars. This experiment will be for the rest of their lives and will be documented for a TV show back here. This project runs so scientist can develop more understanding about the living standards on the Red planet. Some space companies actually have space tours if people want a turn to be in space. I now understand that our knowledge about astronomy and space has improved a lot and how we are still trying to discover more.

I only have a few questions left to do with this article. Are astronomers completely sure that mars has the correct requirements to live there? When will astronomers start sending people into space?

SpaceX Exploration to Space

This report is about Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX and his plans to begin colonizing Mars.

Earlier this year, Elon Musk spoke to a bunch of his admirers about his plans to colonize on Mars. He intends to have a rocket built so it can muster over 100 people and all the supplies needed. If all goes well with this plan, it should take place within the next 50 – 100 years and, if that turns out successful, Musk plans to soon after begin to transfer 1 million people onto the Red Planet.

One of the major focuses of the first few test trials is to look at the fundamentals of the rocket ship that the passengers will be taking and see how it might be improved. Musk says that the first few trials to be run won’t necessarily be focused on the people going (although they are important) but more so on how the actual ship will go on fuel levels, weight sustainability and other mechanical features as such. So, obviously, those people who do wish to be part of the first test runs will have to face the fact that they do have a bit of a high chance of dying.

There are only a few things that I am left with after this report. One of them is, what inspired Elon Musk to put so much effort into populating Mars. How does he think the first trials will go? Does he think Mars can sustain life just as earth can?

Food in Space

This video was about how astronomers eat food in space. Surprisingly enough, there is a lot of different options that you can eat in space, though the meals are a bit different to what we have on Earth

As much as it’s an astronauts dream to live in space, your body has to undergo a few new systems to adapt to its new weightless environment. This means changing your diet and the amount of food you take in. First you’ve got to make your food consumption quite small since it’s very expensive to buy space food. So, since you can’t eat so much, the food has to be modified to pack in as much protein and nutrients as it can because, how else are you going to keep healthy? The food the astronauts eat must be packaged too. If it weren’t then you’d just have bits and pieces floating all over the spaceship and you wouldn’t want that.

Now, what I’ve got left are some questions. I was wondering since these astronauts have to eat so little, how expensive is the food really? And what do the people who provide the food put in there to make sure the astronauts stay healthy? Also, do the astronauts have any say or preference in what they get to eat or is that all just left to the people on earth?

BTN Space Rock

This BTN report is to investigate the inner working of space and what we know.

A few years ago, Russia came very, very close to a meteorite, although it didn’t actually hit so it was just classified as a meteor. Meteors in Earth’s sky may come as a surprise to few, but they actually occur more often than you think. Meteors actually enter our atmosphere multiple times a day at a very high speed. But that high speed and force usually causes it to explode way up really high in the sky so we never really knew it was there. Amazing what we don’t know, isn’t it?

This meteor in particular didn’t just scare people around the world but also was a reminder that we weren’t the only rock in our solar system. This made people wonder, what else is out there? Well to quickly sum it up…

A Comet – a formation of ice and dust which usually comes from the colder, outer parts of our solar system.

An Asteroid – a large rock called metal. Heaps of them stay in an area in space called the “Asteroid Belt” between Mars and Jupiter, but some still find their way to Earth.

Meteoroids – smaller parts of an asteroid that enter earth’s atmosphere every day. When they do we call them meteors and when they actually hit earths ground is when we call them meteorites.

Okay, now all I’m left with are a few questions. Firstly, there are beliefs that asteroids and meteorites were the cause of dinosaur extinction. Could this actually be true? If so, what evidence would there be to prove such a theory? Also, have scientists or astrologists studied the damage they have done to other planets? I think that may be quite interesting to see their effects.

Solar System Report Reflection

This report reflection is about our solar system and its qualities.

Space is an enormous place and our solar system only takes up the tiniest percent of it. It’s located in a calmer part of the Milky Way in which we call home. The solar system has been around for a very long time. 4 ½ billion years to be exact. Although we have had all the time in the world, we haven’t developed the technology that can help us learn EVERYTHING about space but we have been able to collect some information about our solar systems long life.

Our star, the sun, is placed in the centre of the solar system where it is orbited by 8 planets, trillions of asteroids and comets and a handful of dwarf planets.  The major planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune but I’m sure we’ll touch on these much later in the term. But for now, I understand that we don’t know everything there is to know about space but I just wonder when will have more of an idea. When will we have the technology to discover more and what exactly might this technology enable us to do?

I would like to investigate how scientists discovered that Mars could sustain life. I’d like to explore what factors of the planet make it life sustaining, how they come to the conclusion and develop a better understanding about the experiment of sending people to live on Mars. I would also really like to see how this would effect our lives.

Earth and Space Sciences

I would like to study which other specific planets could sustain life also and what components are needed to create a planet that could do such. What makes them that way? What does Earth have that makes it a planet that can hold life and possibly, what do other planets have that prevents them from holding life.
